The Forbidden City is also known as Gu Gong. It is world’s most elaborate palace complex. It has 9,999 rooms spread across more than 70 hectare of land. These Palaces were the seat of Ming and Qing dynasties, who ruled China for more than five centuries. The Forbidden City is located in Beijing, just north of the Tiananmen Square.

Temple of Heaven also known as Tian Tan is second most significant historic structure in Beijing. It is situated south of the Tiananmen Square. This structure spanning over 273 hectares was built in 1420 A.D. Ming rulers built it to show their respect to their forefathers or lineage. In 1998 the UNESCO recognized Temple of Heaven as a World Cultural Heritage Site.

The Bell and Drum Towers also known as Zhong Gu Lou is another interesting historic monument. Traditionally bells and drums have been used in China to tell time. Their roots has been traced historically to the reign of Han dynasty spanning 206 B.C. to 220 A.D. Bells and drum towers were constructed in every city of China but one built in Beijing is tallest and largest of all the bell and drum towers in China. The bell in the tower is largest and heaviest in the country. It’s height is 7.02 meters and it weighs 63 tons. There is lot more to its history just visit to find it out.

Tiananmen Square is located south of the Forbidden City in Beijing. Tiananmen also means the Gate of Heavenly Peace. It is largest square in any city of the world. The square can hold almost a million people. Tenth anniversary of the foundation of People’s Republic of China was commemorated here in 1958.

The Great Wall of China is one of the wonders of the world. It is the only man made structure visible from moon. It is located 70 kilometer northwest of Beijing. Historically construction of wall dates back to first emperor of China. Major portion of the wall was fortified by the Ming rulers as a defensive measure against Mongols. Ming wall is 26 feet high and wide enough for 6 horses to run abreast.
