If there is one instrument that has drastically changed the way people are conducting business, it is the credit card machine. Gone are the days when one had to carry around huge sums of money for their purchases. You no longer need to worry if you suddenly need cash at midnight.

The only limitation is the amount you can withdraw and that depends on the type of account you have. Most general credit card terminals consist of a magnetic stripe reader, which is required to read the details on the magnetic strip on your credit card.
Then there is the keypad that is used to input the amount of money you want to withdraw along with other details like your credit card’s PIN number. The machines also contain a small display where you can see what you are inputting so that you can verify what you have inputted.
These machines also come equipped with a printer that prints out the details of your transaction and shows you the balance you have left in your account. While most credit card machines come with inbuilt printers, there are some models that have a separate printer.
This makes no difference. Most inbuilt printers use the thermal process to burn the characters on a special thermal sensitive paper. The external printers are generally of the dot matrix type. Some of the high ranged credit card terminals come equipped with inkjet printers which have the capability to print out in color too.
The terminals of these credit card machines have various types of displays. Again these are available in either monochrome (black & white) or in color. Most of these displays are of high resolution that allows them to pack in more characters per line.
These displays are measured in lines and columns. Hence if you note that a terminal has an 8x20 display, it means that the terminal can display 8 lines of text and the width of each line is 20 columns.
There are some displays, which have a backlit facility, and this is extremely helpful especially in poor lighting conditions. Most new terminals come standard with backlit displays. One should also keep an eye out on the keys. The bigger the size of the key, the easier it is to punch in the numbers.
